Addiction
An organic red wine from Ribera del Duero in Spain. Made from Tempranillo, it is characterized by bold structure and layered tannins that evolve from silky to powerful. It offers ripe fruit, freshness, minerality, and spice, presenting a full-bodied expression with complexity that benefits from decanting to reveal its full potential.

Ribiera Del Duero, Spain
Addiction comes from Ribera del Duero, a high-altitude region shaped by one of Europe’s most extreme continental climates. Summers are hot and dry, winters long and harsh, and between day and night the temperatures can swing dramatically. These conditions push the vines to their limits, forcing roots deep into sandy loam, limestone, and chalk. The struggle yields fruit of extraordinary concentration, with flavors marked by power, structure, and mineral tension. At the center of this landscape is Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino, a grape that finds its most profound expression here. Its small, thick-skinned berries produce wines that are bold yet elegant, capable of aging with grace while retaining their freshness. The region itself is steeped in history: medieval villages stand on windswept plateaus, Romanesque churches mark the hills, and ancient underground cellars still house barrels of wine. Ribera del Duero is demanding but rewarding, a landscape that gives its wines soul as well as strength.
The Making of Addiction
Addiction is made by fermenting hand-harvested organic Tempranillo, which first undergoes cold maceration to preserve aromatics before native-yeast fermentation in stainless steel at low temperatures. This approach emphasises freshness and purity rather than extraction. The wine then matures for twelve months on fine lees, with a short period in oak to add structure and support the natural concentration of the fruit. After maturation, the alcohol is removed using a low-temperature, aroma-preserving method, maintaining balance, texture, and core expression. The method is intended to preserve the structural traits typical of Tempranillo while adapting it for dealcoholization.

Tempranillo
Addiction is crafted from organically grown Tempranillo from the high-altitude vineyards of Quintana del Pidio. The grape’s natural density and structural integrity allow the wine to open in the glass, respond to decanting, and age over time, qualities that remain present even without alcohol.
- Tempranillo – Thick-skinned, naturally concentrated, and known for flavours of dark fruit, spice, and graphite. Its tannin structure and phenolic weight are essential for maintaining mouthfeel, length, and complexity after dealcoholization.

From a Swedish brand founded over a decade ago that went nationwide in the US this year, this rich, smooth red nonalcoholic blend from southern France is deservedly popular. Drink it until the next shipment of my favorite, Oddbird’s bold spicy tempranillo made from organic Spanish grapes labeled Addiction, arrives next year. Best served slightly chilled.
